The M249 SAW is an American fully-automatic light machine gun of Belgian origin. It can only be obtained via the Mystery Box.

The M249 SAW boasts very high damage per shot and a good rate of fire. It is capable of outputting heavy amounts of sustained damage from its large magazine capacity. The M249 SAW also has very low amounts of recoil when fired.

However, the M249 is very heavy and slow to handle, even for light machine gun standards. Having the weapon out also impedes a sizeable movement speed penalty as well. Refilling the weapon takes a considerable amount of time. Being caught off guard by an unplanned reload can easily prove fatal.

Overall, the M249 SAW is a heavy light machine gun that completely trades handling characteristics for extremely high damage output and low recoil. The weapon shreds apart crowds of zombies with ease. However, the weapon has very low movement speed. Combined with its slow handling and reloads mean that the weapon can be awkward to operate.

Weapon Upgrade[]

When upgraded via the Pack-a-Punch machine, the M249 SAW becomes the Chainsaw.

With the Frenzy Module, the upgraded weapon fires 125% faster for one second after getting a kill.

In addition to the bonus fire rate, the Chainsaw gains an increase to its damage. The upgraded weapon also gains a larger magazine capacity with a larger maximum ammunition reserve.

- SAW stands for Squad Automatic Weapon.
- The weapon is an American adaptation of the Belgian FN Minimi light machine gun.
The name of the upgraded weapon "Chainsaw" is a play the weapon's classification as a SAW.
When firing, the ammunition belt can be seen feeding into the M249 SAW.
- When the M249 only has a few rounds left before needing to reload, the end of the belt can be seen.
- Reloading with very little ammunition remaining in reserves will feed a partial belt.
When inspecting the M249 with an empty chamber, the internal bolt and rail can be seen in the forward position when the lid is lifted open.
- In real life, this would be against standard operating procedure of the M249, where the bolt should always be returned to the rear position before opening the lid. This is a safety measure to minimize the chance of an unexpected cook-off while the lid is open.
