"Double-barreled shotgun. Effective in close range. Sawed-off." ― Description
The Ranger is an American double-barreled shotgun. It is available as a wall weapon for 500 points.
The Ranger costs the same amount as the other starting room weapons and acts as the close-ranged alternative to the M14 and SKS.
As a shotgun, the Ranger fires a high damaging spread of pellets with each trigger pull that is effective at close distances. At early rounds, it is capable of easily killing zombies up close with a single blast.
The Ranger will have to reload after firing from each of its two barrels. The low ammunition capacity of the Ranger means that the player finds themselves reloading very frequently. The Ranger's reload also takes a rather long time, as the player will have to put a shell into each barrel individually. However, the double-barreled nature of the Ranger also limits the rate that it consumes ammunition, allowing its reserves to last a relatively long time.
Beyond its effective range, the Ranger is rendered virtually useless as its pellets fail to do any damage at longer distance. Other starting weapons, such as the SKS, are much more suited for dealing with zombies further away.
The Ranger is a starting weapon that allows the player to easily take out zombies up close with a powerful shotgun blast. Its high close-range damage is capable of killing zombies with a single shot up close. its pellet spread is more forgiving to inaccuracy. It is valuable in early rounds where it can still one-shot zombies but is often replaced as soon as more potent weapons are acquired.
Pros & Cons[]
Pros:
- Cheap and easily accessible.
- Powerful close range damage early.
- One-shot potential during early rounds.
- Pellet spread is more forgiving to inaccurate shots.
Cons:
- Very small ammunition capacity at two shells.
- Reloads are slow and frequent.
- Useless at further ranges.
Locations[]
The Ranger wall weapon can be found at the following locations:
- Graduation - In the nurse's office starting area with the SKS, right of the staircase.
- Research - In the office starting area with the B93 Raffica and M14, between the two barriers on the left.
Weapon Upgrade[]
When upgraded via the Pack-a-Punch machine, the Ranger becomes the Lone Survivor.
With the Madness Module, the upgraded weapon has its magazine capacity increased to 10 rounds and gains a five-round burst. As such, the Lone Survivor retains its double-barreled nature and empties its magazine with two trigger pulls.
The weapon's five-round burst is fired at a faster rate than the fire cap of the Ranger, increasing the overall rate of fire of the Lone Survivor. The hip fire and aim down sight spread of the Lone Survivor is also greatly increased.
To compensate for the weapon's massively increased appetite for ammunition, the Lone Survivor also gains a substantial increase to its maximum ammunition reserves.
In addition to the benefits of the Madness Module, the Lone Survivor also gains greatly increased damage and an increased headshot multiplier.
